Alternative payment methods reach the Play Store and Spain is one of the first countries to integrate them

Google announced a few weeks ago that it was going to change the payment methods in its app store. This movement is not given by the company and, in recent months, we have seen how Apple and Google faced off against Epic Games, reaching a long-awaited conclusion: Epic Games won the case, even though it had to pay.

This victory had a rather bittersweet taste since it had to shell out millions of sums, but it launched something that had been in the pipeline for a long time: new payment methods within the application stores. We didn’t have to wait too long and, in fact, we saw several tests in this regard.

Spotify was one of the companies that had the first access to new payment methods in app stores, allowing users to use other systems and not just the one authorized by Google. Now the situation has widened, forcing the Play Store to offer alternative payment methods for all content.

What’s new is that now developers of the multiple apps found in Google’s app store will be able to access the new payment methods, although this is limited to certain countries. Fortunately, Spain is one of the selected countries.

Normally the feature would be tested in the US market, but this time it was different as only the European Economic Area will have access to this new program. Google clarified that this is a test to see how it worksso if they detect any type of failure or problem, they can decide to cancel this program.

Although the new payment methods are good news for all users and, above all, developers, since they avoid paying a high percentage to Google. Developers must ensure certain measures, such as alternative methods having their own customer support.

Additionally, they must also have the ability to react to any type of unauthorized transaction. Developers should bear payment issues when using other payment methodsthis being the most extreme case since it would be strange if the payment platform did not have this type of service.

For now, it’s an option that developers can use, although they have to be the ones signing up to try out this new feature. This is quite an important step and it will affect how the Google store worksNow it’s up to Apple to take the plunge and integrate this functionality as they did in Mountain View.
