By Aaron Humes: Belize Sugar Industries Limited / American Sugar Refining (BSI / ASR) argued that it would be difficult to effect, as requested by the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA), “a greater transfer of value from the plant. to farmers at this difficult time for the industry. “
BSI / ASR not only refers to a revised version of the sugar and molasses pricing formula, but also to the bagasse payment and reducing the number of payments per season from three to two.
âWe have maintained from the start that the economic viability of the plant is paramountâ¦. In the current stress levels, it is difficult to envision a future investment, âwrites BSI.
Nonetheless, Miller is hopeful that BSCFA will give serious consideration to the proposal presented to them and that the harvest will open next Monday calmly and that a mutually beneficial resolution will be signed before the termination takes effect.
He also warns in an apparent shot to the government that “any unlawful interference with the legitimate rights of a business in Belize by any party will be dealt with through appropriate legal process.” BSI remains a responsible and reliable partner for the development of the northern sugar industry and by extension the country of Belize.
